The figure in this canvas is that of a
young Roman dancer, in one of his
first performances -- specifically of a
Neapolitan dance .
I tried to capture not only the
likeness of the young man, who sat
for me several times so I could sketch
him, but also the joyful spirit of the
music he danced and of the city of
Naples, where the ballet takes place.
